Buoyancy: Why Do Some Objects Sink While Others Float?

97 Words1 Pages
Why do some objects sink while others float? The answer is buoyancy. Buoyancy is the ability or tendency of something to float in water or other fluid.
Archimedes discovered while doing his experiments that any object that is or is sort of (submerged) in a fluid and is (acted) on by an upward or buoyant force. The magnitude, or strength, of the force equals the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. The weight of the object is lowered by the weight of the (displaced) fluid. If the object is the right shape it will float.
