Business Consultant What do you want to be when you grow up? It's the age old question, and yet, most of the time, people still don't know the answer. When you're a toddler, you seem invincible and you also think you'll one day become the next president or maybe even the tooth fairy. A few years later, you'll want to be a singer or a ballet dancer. But as you get older, with every passing year, your career choices start to dwindle and you become more realistic about what you want to be when you grow up. Basically, a company or business hires a consultant if they're barely starting their company or to add something new and fresh to their flailing business. A consultant comes in and examines the company's workers and overall efficiency. They do a lot of background research about a particular business and sees what the competition is doing that's making them better. They take all the information and use it to help the company become more efficient and more profitable. They have the authority to fire employees if they see that they are a burden to the company or if the company doesn't really need them. Usually, consulting firms will only recognize degrees that have been accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Most business people in general must be good communicators and, depending if you want to be in financing, you must be efficient in Excel or PowerPoint. They must also be able to work in teams and not just listen, but hear, what their team members suggest. Being good under pressure, being resourceful, good at time management, and having attention to detail will also work in your favor as this type of job requires these skills and qualities. Usually most of your training comes from your classes at the college or university you chose. Majoring in Business is actually fun, if you have the right perspective. Mostly, you make PowerPoints and present and get into groups and create your own business and compete with other groups' business. You are given real life situations and you must find the best way to deal with it.
