John is the main character and the protagonist of the story “By the Waters of Babylon’’. He’s also the son of the tribal priest. He is a character who displays bravery and determination in his personality. The reason why I chose the words bravery and determination to describe John is because he was brave enough to travel to the Place of Gods even though he was warned that it was forbidden to journey towards there. He assumed that he would have gotten killed if he trespassed the place of the gods but he went and took that risk anyways. He felt determined because while he was starting his journey, he was searching for signs to see if he was destined to travel East. The reason why i chose this theme for the story is because knowledge pushed John through his journey. Through his journey he learns about the dead places, goes to the Place of Gods, discovers a dead god and travels to the Ou-dis-san river. In the story it states “ If I went to the place of gods, I would surely die, but, if I did not go, I could never be at peace with my spirit again”. This is an example of how dedicated he is to learn. Through this quest he learns that knowledge also helped him face his fears. When he is told by his father to collect metal from the dead places he has this terror that forms in him. But as he gets experience and gets to know the Dead Places he loses that fear. In the story John's father states that to much knowledge can take control of the mind. This tells John that the knowledge that he is about to be faced with might be too much for him and could overwhelm him. The whole country or world is in its tribal roots meaning people were mostly on foot. John is traveling to the place of gods so he gets to a river called Ou-dis-sun a very long and wide river. Across the river in the Place of gods and the river is the hudson river and the place of gods is Manhattan, New York. The people are using bow and arrows as weapons and women are using spin tools for clothing, so they are stuck in the tribal roots. The reason why New york is chosen to be the location of the setting is because In today's time it is a place of riches and success.
