CBA Claim: Book Banning violates the US Constitution because it violates the First Amendment, which states that every citizen has freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. Book banning violates that because the government is essentially saying that you cannot write that, which goes against the Constitution.

• Also, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas said, “Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.
• The Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association says in the Library Bill of Rights, that “Librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents-and only parents- have the right and responsibility to restrict the access of their children-and only their children- to library resources.”

Summary • Books are challenged to protect other people, but I think if you are a parent you should be the one monitoring what your child reads and protecting them from books that are not appropriate for them. The government should not ban books just because a group of people thinks that it is
