Did you know that there is still a modern form of slavery? For example. there are horrible prison camps in North Korea. One of these camps is called Camp 14. These prison camps are much like what slavery was like in the antebellum South. Both slaves in the antebellum South and the modern day prisoners in Camp 14 live very horrible lives. Slaves were forced to work for nothing and beaten for disobedience. In the same manner, prisoners in Camp 14 are put into prisons to work and weren't given enough to eat.The life of prisoners in Camp 14 can be compared to the lives of slaves in the antebellum South. Slaves in the South and Prisoners in Camp 14 both had an opportunity to have an education. Slaves in the South were denied the right to an education so they had to be taught in secret. If a slave were to get caught teaching another slave, they would be beaten and in some cases even sold. In the book Kindred, Dana got caught teaching Nigel to read, and Dana was beaten. Prisoners in Camp 14 do get an education, but they would be brainwashed with North Korea’s political beliefs. People who were born in the camp, like in Shin’s case, didn’t have the understanding that the world was round prior to being exposed to the outside world. …show more content…

Both slaves and prisoners ate corn mush.The was that the prisoners differ from the slaves is that , Shin said that prisoners did not get fed enough and were forced to eat rats and insects to survive and to avoid starvation.
