Immigrants to Canada A debate has been made about whether the country of Canada should accept or reject immigrants. In 1976, The Science Council of Canada quoted “ Canada could not help the world by taking in more immigrants, and could only destroy its own way of life in attempting to do so. It would have to reduce immigration.” The author clearly says that immigration is something that shouldn’t be supported, and it's ruining the country.
The Metis people are descendants of First Nation women and European men. Many Metis were rejected by both the European and first nation people, because they were not completely one or the other nationality. This resulted in the Metis seeking acceptance from one and other, which allowed them to feel more connected with each other. Even though Metis are part European they were born in Canada, being born in Canada could give them a feeling of Canadian nationalism. Even though some may feel connected to Canada they might also be loyal to their first nation and European ancestry.
If culture is defined as the artifacts of a community’s values, history, traditions and practices, in Canada multiculturalism would have to be one of the defining cultural traits. As student’s people are exposed to people from other cultures and with reality television shows like Big Brother the clash of cultures can be seen. House guest are living with people that they may have never even considered being friends with. The show reflects Canada’s cultural diversity. The contestants come from across the country and reflect our multicultural society.
Growing up in California, my whole life has been around farming and like many others, it’s how I make a living. It’s now been at least a year, living through the Dust bowl and many people have migrated to California with the hope of surviving this crisis. Keeping my crops has become a struggle and that's what most people including me depend on. I am lucky enough to be able to pay my mortgages even though I’m not able to keep the land with the help of family. It’s practically impossible.
Canada is known as one of the most diverse countries in the world. Also, this diversity is due solely on immigration. These people may have little to no understanding of the English language. So, the question becomes should new immigrants that want to become Canadians speak only English? I disagree with this notion because Canada would begin lacking in: cultural diversity, translators, and in racial diversity.
In this day and age, today’s countries and their cultures are immensely different and unique in comparison to each other. China and Canada are no exceptions. The Chinese, known for their famous silk production and their Great Wall of China, hold an impressive history ranging over 5000 years. Canada on the other hand, has only been in the game for 150 years. The British colonization in 1867 had a major impact on the First Nations and has left a serious mark on their community.
“Canada is a multicultural nation and will become even more so as time goes on.” The statement represents how Canada is so rich in culture and how welcoming we are. Canada is a land full of immigrants and will continue to grow with more people with different cultures. All Canadians are descendants of immigrants that immigrated to Canada in one point in their lifetime. Being a child of Indian immigrants, I experience a lot of multiculturalism.
