History of Canadian Space Exploration

Space, the final frontier. Canadians have always been resourceful and have found ways to contribute and innovate how the world travels and sees space. Canada’s history of space exploration has had an impact on many generations, from famous astronauts who devote their lives to science and inspire many, to the advancement of mechanical innovation that furthers our knowledge and development, to finally, the creation of the Canadarm that has been an international success and has spanned generations with its successes.

Canada has produced several famous astronauts who have devoted their lives to science and inspired many people. Roberta Bondar is the first Canadian woman to go into space. Her work studying effects on the human body from low gravitation, allowed NASA to prepare for lengthy stays in the International Space Station. One of the most recent innovations has been the launch of the CASSIOPE. This is the first made-in-Canada multi-purpose small satellite platform that allows space experts to learn about the mysteries of space weather. Another contribution in the areas of space mechanics is the ExoMars. It is a project the Canadian Space Agency was able to bid on and won and therefore works in partnership with the European team to develop the rover that explores Mars. Specifically, the Canadian team built the communication antenna subsystem. The ExoMars program takes a closer look at whether life ever existed on Mars. Most recently Canada is recognized in its contribution to the James Webb Space Telescope. Canadians developed a scientific instrument and guidance system and are taking part in the actual science mission that is noted to be one that will change all of our understanding of
