How Did Lester Pearson Change Canada

Canada has come a long way. From becoming an independent nation to participating in the first and second World Wars, Canada has lost a lot but gained even more. Many of the Canadians have grown from the history of their past and others made history. Lester Pearson was one of those individuals who left behind a positive legacy. Pearson was the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and the most notable Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968. He believed in giving Canada its own identity and giving Canadians a better quality of life. His contribution towards peacekeeping and maintaining foreign relations has had a positive impact on Canada due to which Canadians have continuously been appreciated for their effort in peacekeeping. He took great initiatives towards solving issues between different groups in Canada. Pearson introduced a new Canadian Flag to help create an international identity of Canada. Before the Maple Leaf flag, the Red Ensign was the flag of Canada. The Red Ensign had the Union Jack symbol that represented British, not Canada. To replace the Red Ensign, Pearson went in search for a new flag for Canada and came across the idea of a new flag with Maple Leaf. He expected that the new flag will reflect Canada’s independence. The flag did not have any symbol of race or religion. In fact, it represented all the citizens of Canada. Not only that, but the flag also did not show any sign of the French and English culture. Due to all these reasons, Pearson’s flag was selected as Canada’s official flag and it was first raised in February 1965. Pearson was greatly praised for his idea of the new Maple Leaf Flag, and this flag still continues to fly today. In addition, Pearson indulged the French-Canadians by creating a Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism in 1963 July. Pearson’s main aim towards establishing this commission was to create a genuine relationship between the English and French society. He spent a lot of his time trying to improve tensions between the French and English Canadians. This commission helped to prevent Canada from separating into two different regions where Quebec would have been French, and the rest of Canada would have been English. In fact, it set forth an idea to promote both of the languages across Canada. A huge portion of this commission contributed towards French and English being made official languages of Canada.
