A group of pilgrims are riding together to Canterbury. They have stopped at a tavern called Tabard Inn, which is located near London. The host has decided that he will conduct a contest to see which pilgrim tells the best stories. The winner will receive a free meal which the other pilgrims will pay for. The pilgrim telling the Squires Tale is a young bachelor around the age of twenty. The squire is very handsome and well spoken. The host wants the Squire to tell a story about love which is the Squire’s favorite subject. The Squire tells a tale about King Cambyuskan, his wife Elpheta, sons Algarsyff and Camblo and his daughter Canace. They are having a big celebration in the royal hall for the king. During the celebration, a knight that no one knows, rides into the hall on a brass horse bearing gifts for the king and his daughter. The brass horse is one of the gifts. The horse will take the king anywhere he wants to go within twenty-four hours. He gave the kings daughter Canace a golden ring which gives her the power to communicate with birds while wearing it on her thumb. He also gives her a mirror that will tell the truth about a person while they are looking into it. The last gift he bears is a naked sword. It can go through the hardest armor. But it can also heal the wound that it conflicts on a person by touching the wound with the tip of the sword. After the celebration ends, they all go to get some rest. The way the pilgrim goes into such detail, is one of the strengths of the tale. He makes it so you can actually visualize what is happening. A weakness of the story is that it is not finished. This tale is considered a romantic story told by a bachelor who is in love with love. The theme shows how love can hurt you deeply when you give someone your heart. It is an important lesson everyone learns. This theme is the best type of tale for the Squire to
