The Cold War was a period of intense political and military rivalry and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. During this time, both countries faced each other in an ideological and geopolitical struggle for world supremacy. Although there were no direct confrontations between them, the Cold War was characterized by a series of indirect conflicts and a constant arms race. The Cold caused the division of the world: the Western bloc led by the United States and the Eastern bloc led by the Soviet Union. These blocks represented two opposing political and economic systems: capitalism and communism. Both countries sought to expand their influence and convince other nations to adopt their system. Espionage, propaganda, and covert operations were common tactics used by both sides to gather information, manipulate public opinion, and destabilize their opponents. The fear of subversives infiltrating society was a significant concern during this period, leading to heightened surveillance and the implementation of measures to counteract these activities. The subversive nature of the Cold War contributed to the overall tension and mistrust between the two superpowers. “The Smith Act was enacted in response to growing fears of fascist and communist sedition, and originally targeted disruptive immigrant leaders of the growing labor movement” (jackmillercenter.org). This act was created to prohibit: the advocacy, support, advising, and teaching on how to overthrow the government of assassination of government officials, the organization, attempt to organize, or affiliation with groups that encourage the overthrow government.
