In the book “Capitalist Realism” by Mark Fisher, Fisher writes about how the processes of the world and lifestyles have been so heavily integrated into capitalism that people could not imagine a way out. Throughout the book Fisher describes the different reasons as to why capitalism has been made the forefront ideology and how interpassivity keeps society from questioning and actively changing the system. WALL-E, a fictional animated film directed by Jim Morris and Lidsey Collins, is an excellent example of both interpassivity and capitalist realism because it highlights the capitalist system's systematic problems. Interpassivity is a term used to describe the ideas and experiences portrayed in media that replace our own experiences. Through the use of video calling from floating chairs, the availability of various different activities such as golf and swimming, and robots available to be there at any person's beck and call, people began to lose track of time. 700 years of time to be exact. With interpassivity, comes the opportunity for corporations to take advantage of people's livelihood and basic needs. This idea to send people to space by Buy n Large ultimately allowed the company to not take accountability for their actions and force people into space craft. Ironically, the solution of a luxury cruise spacecraft is also profitable to the same company.
