Language is crucial for communication and interaction. We all rely on language to interact with each other. When a language is lost it can lead to the decline of a communities culture and tradition. These communities may start to feel a sense of isolation. Language is how some communities feel connected to each other. When the language starts to die, then the connection these communities had could possibly fade off as well. However, the loss of language on the rest of the world could lead to a loss of details in history. We could lose the understanding of the world around us. Some of us could lose our mother tongue. A darwinian is someone who believes species change over time through the process of variation, inheritance, survival and reproduction. As much as I would love for things to stay the same, I do believe that language among many other things naturally changes and evolves over time. I believe language is a main way of communication and carries historical importance such as knowledge, worldviews, and identities. This semester I took a class called Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Health professionals and in that class I learned the importance of diversity, especially in a healthcare setting. Diversity brings different perspectives and skills that can lead to improved problem-solving and overall performance. Loss of linguistic diversity can limit one’s ability to fully express themselves and connect with others, so yes I think it would not be very beneficial for our world if we were to loose linguistic diversity. I learned about many good practices in lecture such as it is necessary to respect and recognize the linguistic diversity within a society and minority languages should be protected. I also learned inside and outside of class that every language should have equal opportunity, there should be quality education in multiple languages to ensure success in the dominant language as well as their native language, and lastly safe places should be created amongst different languages. Some bad practices I learned inside and outside of class include creating a divide between communities that speak a different language, banning the use of a language in education or public spaces, and creating an environment where one language is better than another. When my group and I presented the other week, we learned that the Turkish were not being very inclusive of the Kurdish language in Turkey. The Turkish government wanted to ban the Kurdish language, and the government created an environment where one language is better than another. This is not acceptable because all languages should be valued for what they are. Language is significant to ones identity, culture and traditions, as I mentioned above. Everyone has the right to express what ever language they would like, and language rights should be protected at all
