In The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, contains a peculiar man named Roger Chillingworth who kills for revenge. In the same manner in Moby Dick written by Herman Melville Captain Ahab also sets his mind on revenge. These two men have a real desire to do what they think will make them right but actually puts them lower than others.
Roger Chillingworth handles his situation with Dimmesdale quite interesting. Not only did he seek revenge on Dimmesdale, but he also wanted him to be dead. Chillingworth becomes clever in the way he kills in order to protect himself from getting caught. He ends up trying to be Dimmesdale’s doctor and be very close to him. One would suspect that this nice old man is harmless well he intentionally poisoned Dimmesdale to make his death long. Chillingworth made Dimmesdale’s death last over seven years according to the novel. Not only did Roger Chillingworth kill Dimmesdale, but he made him suffer in and inhumane way. He only has his mind set on one thing, which is the whale Moby Dick. Ahab does not care about anything other than killing this stupid whale. Starbuck tries to insist that they kill whales along the way for money but Ahab just keeps saying move on. Eventually when they actually get to the whale; each time they go out Captain sends everyone including himself. This man is willing to risk everything including his own life. Ahab doesn’t even care if he makes it back to his family. The final time he sends everyone after Moby Dick just as Elijah says, everyone but one dies. Ishmael lived out of multiple people on the ship. When Ahab risks everything just for revenge on the whale, he is either crazy or evil…Well he is both. Ahab gets everyone killed, which hurts everyone’s family’s back at home. Ahab kills himself by trying to get the whale but everyone dies and the whale still lives
