In this essay i will be defining as well as describing the structure-agency of Captain De Koster as a police officer through the eyes of Altbeker. Reviewing and revealing social forces that impact the life of a police officer in a new democracy.

Pg 19) “ he defines Social Structure as follows: Structure is the complex frame work of societal institutional ( such as the economy, politics and religion) and the social practices (such as rules and social roles that make up a society and that organize and establish limits on people’s behaviour. I could have agreed more seeing the life of Captain De koster being socially structured.

The agency in Captain De Koster is seen when he make a decision to stay as a police officer even though the working conditions are not as contusive. His biggest fear nor worry is “ he works long hours, under dangerous conditions with no promotions, all this has force him to make a choice which was to stay as police officer. In his agency he further compares himself to an “Elephant with a dart in its Arse” in a way he does not know whether he is coming or going “he is helpless”. Even if he goes to work it does not mean he do enjoy working. Though he might sound negative when he is out on duties he is strict and makes sure he enforces law he is very firm and hands-on serving community with authority.

Before agency, Structure has stood in as a social aspect that gives an overall understanding of how human behave in a society. By so saying I take a position of structure as it clearly explains the life of a police officer in broader sense, not that agency is not assuring that, but is based its facts on an individual whereas structure is based on society which in away makes me.Kendall, D.
