Character is a variety of attributes including the existence of lack of virtues such as empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty, or of good behaviors or habits. Also in my opinion a big aspect of a person's character is what they do when nobody is watching them, who they really are. Morality is the differentiation of intentions, decisions, and actions between distinguished as proper and those that are improper. I think these two qualities were very impactful on my decision whether Captain Madwell’s actions were justified in the story. I believe that Captain Madwell was trying to do the honorable thing and relieve his friend of the horrible situation he was in. Once you get to read the end of the story you kind of feel bad for both soldiers. Captain Madwell who just killed his best friend and thought he was helping him out. Sergeant Halcrow who couldn’t talk, have a choice whether he wanted to live or die, is now dead and could’ve potentially been saved. The moral content of the story does change from a perspective of a friend helping another friend. Once you get to the end of the story the moral content seems to change to murder. My argument doesn’t change at the end of the story because given the information that Captain Madwell he did the right thing in my opinion. From what he knew, his friend was going to be left there to die that night alone. Captain Madwell didn’t know that they were sending support from him and he had already been through enough. I also feel the full blame if any should be put on Captain Madwell. I feel as if though that Major Creede and the hospital attendants had been watching him the whole time. The ending did make me reconsider my argument, but I do believe that Captain Madwell actions were justified. Given the information he had, he felt that this was something that he had to do.
