Captivity In The Film Blackfish: Seaworld

In 2013, the film Blackfish was released into the wild world of propaganda. This documentary dives into the seemingly problems with the sea-park industry, specifically SeaWorld, and attempts to expose how intelligent these mammals are. Blackfish argues that these marine animals should not be kept in captivity due to their aggressive behavior mixed with SeaWorld’s workers lacking knowledge of orcas.With little statistics and only emotionally based, Blackfish attempts to tear apart SeaWorld with the idea that captivity of a wild animal results in a violent, barbaric creature that injures/kills the trained workers. This biased film does not show the reaping benefits of captivity of wild animals though. Animals in captivity help to increase the educational value of said animal, contribute to the breeding programs/care for the females, and expands the research done for different animals to better ensure a long life. …show more content…

With industries such as SeaWorld, people can view and learn more about these animals. SeaWorld creates the unique ability to observe wildlife which creates an appreciation and awareness of it. A 2005 Harris Interactive poll released by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums found 97% of respondents agreed that marine aquariums, zoos, and parks “play an important role in educating the public about marine mammals they might not otherwise have the chance to see”.
Also, a study performed by Diane Sweeney done in 2009 gave her better understanding of zoological settings. Specifically she learned about marine mammals through interaction programs. From her study she concluded not only that the participants learned about the training and conservation of marine mammals, but that most participants shifted their attitudes and gained a sense of control about increasing/beginning stewardship
