Lawyers It is clear that the practice of law has been around for a long time: the first known legal decision was made in 1850 B.C.E. and the Bible contains references to lawyers. For hundreds and hundreds of years, lawyers have been instrumental in unifying, regulating, and maintaining social order. They were significant in organizing the foundations of law and order that are apparent in modern day society. Consequently, lawyers have been associated with the rise of civilization throughout history (“A Brief History”). Today, lawyers continue to help regulate our society through the application of law.
VALUES
Lawyers value recognition, achievement, and independence. The legal profession satisfies the need for recognition because the occupation offers the chance of advancement, leadership, and prestige. Achievement is central to the occupation because it is mainly results-oriented and lawyers are able to utilize all of their skills. Winning a trial would satisfy a lawyer’s need for achievement. Lawyers must be able to work on their own and take charge in making their own decisions, therefore, independence is imperative to the career (“Summary Report for Lawyers”).
