Gordon S. Wood, “the preeminent historian of the Revolution”, is a well known American historian who has received several awards such as the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize for his historical books. In his book, The American Revolution: A History, he breaks down the key events based on his experiences and knowledge on the Revolutionary period. Wood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 27,1933. Wood teaches at many liberal renowned universities such as Brown, Cambridge, Northwestern , and Harvard. Now being eighty one years old, he recently retired from Brown University and lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.

During the Founding Fathers time period, American literature was based on logic, unifying as a nation and the Founding Fathers beliefs that the nation should be independent from England. The ending of Henry’s speech was very emotional because he compares the rich white delegates of being slaves under King Henry. Explanations of the American Revolution are extracted from the real life accounts of individuals who were directly involved in the activities that took place during this period. One of the Key authors focused in the essay is Mary Jemison, a white woman married into the American Indian tribe of Seneca. She lived the better part of her life alongside the Seneca community and endured a multitude of experiences that enabled her to write about her compelling account of the American Revolution from the year 1775-1779. Indian tribes lived in harmony along the whites, who were the Colonialists and the Americans. During the time of writing of the accounts, most of the States were under colonial rule, but the grip that the colonialists had on the people was sleeping away as rebel groups formed to fight off the oppressive reign of the colonialists.
In the colonial era, through the Revolutionary War, the foundation of America was oratorically clarified as an act of prudence—that is, God led people, specifically the white Europeans, to America to find a new and superior or incomparable societal order that would be the light unto all realms.2 In fact, many settlers also believed in creating a new nation filled with history and stories. Along the same lines, Americans imagined a community created through selectively and elaborated events, myths of origin, courageous stories, and asserted values.3

Discerning the OPC elements of the work first allowed me to then evaluate its values and limitations. Through my investigation, I concluded that this piece is a useful reference, in spite of some areas where primary source support is necessary. Wood’s Pulitzer Prize winner qualifications lend him credibility, which somewhat negates the doubtfulness of certain unsupported claims, but more so it is the citation of secondary authors that truly solidifies the work’s reliability as a source, overall. As an introduction, and a stand-alone work, this piece functions as a new and helpful perspective on the impact of the American Revolution.
The American Revolution is arguably the turning point of American history as it resulted in somewhat of a significant, positive change in politics, economics, and society as a whole. However, from 1775 to 1800, the effects of the revolution on the American society were subtle as most principles glorified by revolutionists contradicted the examples set forth by colonial reality. Perhaps most alike to revolutionary beliefs was the American economy and how it participated in free trade or encouraged the independence of hard labor. Politically, the states did apply Enlightenment and republican ideas as promised, but more often than not, the benefits of such ideas were limited to rich, land-owning, protestant, white men. David Meyer made a historical reconstruction of agricultural development that is analytically powerful. Also, he made several tables and charts that are good in order to provide a complete understanding of colonial America. Meyer is restating this familiar story in a puzzled way, where the parts are economic, urban and agricultural historical facts. Meyer documented the economic relations between growing commercial settlements and the hinterlands, emphasizing the conscious decision making behind new cultivars, the cultivation of new markets, and the acceptance and rejection of new forms of tools and transportation. While reading about American history the thing that I found most appealing was the limited rights that women had during this era. Although women gave the early settlers longer life expectancy and brought hope to their future, women still were not considered equal to a man. Women were discriminated against and didn’t play an important role in early American history. Generally, women had fewer legal rights and career opportunity than men because they were considered weak and not able to perform certain tasks. Different women came from different ethnic backgrounds and were all created equal in the eyes of men.

Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672) has been a long-lasting leading figure in the American literature who embodied a myriad of identities; she was a Puritan, poet, feminist, woman, wife, and mother. Bradstreet’s poetry was a presence of an erudite voice that animadverted the patriarchal constraints on women in the seventeenth century. In a society where women were deprived of their voices, Bradstreet tried to search for their identities. When the new settlers came to America, they struggled considerably in defining their identities. However, the women’s struggles were twice than of these new settlers; because they wanted to ascertain their identities in a new environment, and in a masculine society.
