A Different World
Introduction
For my interview, I interviewed a young woman I call Carmen for the purpose of this paper. Carmen took me on a journey of sorrow, courage, and triumph. For the purpose of this paper, I will share with you the history of her culture and Carmen’s story. Let us begin her journey!
Carmen’s World
Carmen grew up in Guatemala, a country in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and west. In addition, her country has one of the highest rates of violent crime and human trafficking, according to the osac.gov website. In 2013, Guatemala reported an average of 101 murders per week. In comparison to America, that is a staggering number of people murdered each week.

Popular dishes in Guatemala include enchiladas, quesadillas, and tamales. In comparison to America culture, hamburgers, hotdogs, and apple pie are some of our cuisine. Now, that I have given you a little history about Carmen’s culture, let us hear her story.
Carmen’s Story Carmen was a child when her father was murdered by gang members. Her mother moved to the United States to try to build a new life. She left Carmen with a relative, until she could send for her. However, her relative sold her to a man who raped her repeatedly. After years of abuse, Carmen found the courage to leave and find her mother in the United States. Carmen was sixteen years old when she emigrated in the 1980. Carmen put herself in the hands of a coyote. The journey by bus took about 6 weeks. She stated, “I was scared and lonely, but I knew I had to be strong and brave, if I wanted to see my mother.” Carmen crossed the Pecos on a raft. She walked and ran through scrubland for about two hours until U.S. Homeland Security officials stopped her, but-finally- she was in
