Throughout our lives, we individually carry items that are of importance to us and have significant meaning. We all carry a sort of substance that incorporates an interpretation, whether the items may be mental or physical. In the short story “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, we are informed of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and the physical items and mental overviews that individual soldiers carried throughout their expedition. There is frequently more to someone than meets the eye, for we never truly know what sort of tranquility or obstacles one has been through—until we have heard their story.
The first item I physically carry with me on a day to day basis is a bracelet. This was a gift given to me as a child from my mother, who had bought it from a fundraiser when I was in elementary school. It is a stainless-steel bracelet that is intertwined with navy blue leather. The pendant resembles the United States flag, but is merely with 5 stars and 7 stripes. Each time I notice this bracelet I’m immediately reminded of my mother—who is in fact the utmost important person in my life. She is somebody that I hold tremendously dear to my heart and admire.
