Using GC-MS to find caffeine in Pepsi

INTRODUCTION

Caffeine are one of the main components in carbonated drinks. Caffeine is a drugs that helps to stimulate the central nervous system it is considered to be world’s most consumed psychoactive drugs. One of the reason why caffeine is very popular is because it helps to prevent drowsiness, caffeine prevents adenosine which cause drowsiness from reaching its receptor by intercepting it adenosine have a very similar structure with caffeine. Beverages such as Pepsi decided to integrated caffeine in them to help with relieving and preventing drowsiness and to improve performance.

There are a few adverse effects of caffeine if it was taken excessively it would lead to a several long term effect on the body systems for example on the Central Nervous System, Digestive and Excretory system, Circulatory and Respiratory system and on the Reproductive system.

Too much caffeine can affect your alertness, as you know caffeine makes you awake too much of these could cause headaches due to lack of sleep and in some cases it would cause insomnia (inability to fall asleep)
Even though the body can cope with the excessive consumption of caffeine upon withdrawal of caffeine it can cause a few problems. Some of the withdrawal symptoms are anxiety, irritability, drowsiness and tremors. Overdose in caffeine can lead to hallucinations and confusions and sometimes can cause death.

• Effects on Digestive and Excretory System
Caffeine can also affect the digestive and excretory system. Caffeine helps in building up of acids in the stomach which cause heartburn and upset stomach. Excessive caffeine may also cause the body to lose large amount of water especially when consumed after exercising

Some of the withdrawal symptoms of caffeine on digestive and excretory system are body nausea and vomiting and the symptoms of caffeine overdose this system are diarrhea, excessive thirst and increased
