The Bobo Doll Experiment
Is human behavior learned through social interaction and imitation or is it an inherited gene? Albert Bandura believed that human behavior is a learned behavior. He contended that children that were exposed to an adult that showed aggressive behavior were more likely to exhibit more aggressive behavior. Likewise, children exposed to an adult exhibiting passive behavior would be more passive. He contended that the children exposed to passive behavior would be even less likely to be aggressive than the group that were not exposed to adult at all. The level of violence and methods of violence were rated from each of the three groups in the last stage of the experiment.
Based on the observation of the children exposed to the aggressive adult the children in the second group exhibited the highest level of aggression. The emulated the adult both with the physical and verbal aggression towards the bobo doll. Likewise, the children in group three that were exposed to the passive adult that was not aggressive with either the aggressive toys or non- aggressive toys, the children played in a quiet and non-aggressive manner.
The children that were exposed to the passive adult and the children with no adult at all show little aggressive behavior. The children with the adult role model showed the least aggression which proved that through the positive calm social interaction is a learned behavior
