The Battle at Bunker Hill, which occurred on June 17, 1775, lasted no more than two hours, yet it was one of the bloodiest and most important battles of the American Revolution. Despite being defeated by the British, American forces held their own, wounding or killing nearly half of the Redcoats who fought in the battle. The Americans had significantly less soldiers than the British and were running low on ammunition by the end of the battle. However, the Battle at Bunker Hill is significant to the American Revolution because it gave Americans the confidence they needed to continue fighting, eventually winning the revolution, and made the British realize that American forces were stronger than they had originally assumed. During the Autumn and Winter of 1774 tensions between the British and American forces grew.
In the starting years of the war, the British generally won most battles due to their far superior sea power. After the invasion of Canada, the American colonist rebellion invasions and attacks continued. Battles after battles were being fought and everywhere the anger and the revenge taking nature was visible in both the colonists and the British officials’ eyes. (Battle of Bunker Hill) A very key part in the battle was who the leaders were. The British had a total of seven leaders and commanders, while the Patriots had just four. Some of the leaders fought while others gave commands to the rest of the soldiers (Alchin, Linda). The British were led by General William Howe, he was the main leader.
To illustrate, The American Revolution editors explain “ The defenders were armed with muskets and cannons, and Montgomery was instantly killed.” If he wasn’t killed then he would probably would have been a good leader in the Continental Army. The other two British soldiers are Captain William DeLaPlace and Sir Guy Carleton. Sir Guy Carleton was the governor of Quebec. For instance, Peter Fitzgerald says “ Sir Guy Carleton was the governor of Quebec and he felt that Quebec could be the next move for Americans.”
Even after losing the battle, American forces gained confidence to become stronger. The battle of Bunker Hill provided encouragement for the colonists and helped Americans gain independence. It helped the colonists send a clear message to the British that they were able to stand tall and strengthen their colonies to fight for their freedom. This battle was a very significant event in the Revolutionary War and had a direct affect on the outcome of the war and our history.
