Art has always played a key role throughout all of history. It has many purposes ranging from divulging concealed truths to simply expressing ones feelings. Subsequently, art still holds the same functionality today. Jungian Psychology Retreat #3, a captivating and thought-provoking art piece done with the use of graphite on paper. The graphite drawing created by Casey Lard is 29 X 22” and is currently displayed in HACC (Harrisburg Area Community College) Lancaster’s campus art gallery. The initial glance at the drawing reveals a pig in the lower middle portion of the piece. This pig has the most depth and detail out of everything else in the drawing. This depth and detail helps in bringing emphases to it. The pig has the features of something jumping out at a potential viewer. Consequently, the method in which Lard draws and positions everything points and draws the eye towards the pig. Especially the family’s feet since they all fade into the pig. The woman’s dress leads to the pig in two different ways. Firstly, by moving directly towards the pig and fading into the feet and secondly by using the wing. As stated earlier the dress seems to fade into the wing, which in turn is attached directly to the pig. The strange rooster leg also leads one back to the pig. The artist used the thicker and darker lines to produce more detail and depth. This can be noted, most easily on the pig and even on the man. The lines are influential in detecting the many shapes hidden within the drawing. The picture as a whole can as a matter of fact be split into three triangles. One starts at the head of the man and it spreads out from there and the next starts on the standing boy’s head. The final triangle may be harder to see because it is in the middle starting with the pig’s head. This use of triangles is often used among artist to organize and outline the work beforehand. Moreover, there are more shapes throughout the drawing, but the main shapes seem to be the rectangles for the bodies and hands of the people and the ovals for their heads.
