How do Authors Create Suspense? Authors create suspense by not giving you much detail, and not telling you what’s happening or what’s not happening. In the two stories “The Tell Tale Heart” and “ The Pedestrian” both have many suspenseful moments. In the story, “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe the story starts out with not much background which leaves you wondering what’s going to happen.

The story that had the most suspense was “The Sniper” because the author used short, choppy sentences, left cliffhangers at the end of paragraphs, and had a plot twist at the end of the story. Liam O’Flaherty’s use of short, choppy sentences makes it suspenseful because they don’t give you a lot of information. The lack of information leads you to keep reading so you can find out what happens next. If the sentences are drawn out, you don’t get a suspenseful feeling since everything is there in one sentence.

Without suspense, the book would be boring and uninteresting to read. The author uses these three main techniques to keep the reader engaged. First off, Connell uses foreshadowing to create suspense by using appalling words to map out the near future, and by using dialogue. The author uses dreadful words like “dark” and “cannibal” to foreshadow the daunting future.

Suspense seems to be something that lingers through each story. From the beginning of “The Cask of Amontillado,” the story only grew more and more suspenseful. It all began when Montresor explains to us that he had been insulted and would get revenge. Montresor stated, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” (Poe 1). Additionally, in “The Masque of the Red Death,” the story had also been suspenseful since the start when we learned about the Red Death and what it had caused.

Many books claim to have suspense and most do, but they do a poor job of balancing it out. Jon Krakauer does a great job of balancing out slow, factual evidence, and action or suspense. ¨The ration of misery to pleasure was greater by an order of magnitude than any other mountain I'd been on.¨ (Krakauer 140) In this quote Jon explains the amount of pain and misery on Everest compared to the amount of gratification.
Suspense is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. For instance, page 173 states, “And this I did for seven long nights- every night just at midnight- but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me; but his Evil Eye”. Page 173 has many examples of suspense but, the main one was that he wouldn’t kill the man for seven days. He was safe because, his eye was closed but, this then makes the reader fear for the man because, what if one of his eyes opened.
When you watch a tv show and do you find it annoying when they go to commercial break right before something important is about to happen? That is an example of suspense. You usually sit through the commercials to see what happens right? It keeps you hooked. The short story that I will be referring to and drawing examples of suspense from is Pickman’s Model by H.P. With all we know about Poe and his many works, we 're hit with suspense and anticipation by the first part of the story. Later in the tale, the narrator slows down and reveals his preparations that lead to the murder in such a deliberately enticing and suspenseful way, that even though you knew what was going to happen, it was still intense and suspenseful to read. Suspense is the most fun when you are reading a story or a book. Suspense makes the story alive and enhance the reader's interest. At start, the story will make you think that you are going in one direction while so many things happening at once, but it will take your breath away at the end. Take a murder mystery story it will give you so many facts and it will make you think that who murder the victim and as you come to the end you were wrong all along. What sets the stage for a suspense story are things such as setting, time, character, theme, dialogues, etc.
Suspense was profound in “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. Throughout the entirety of the book, he left the reader with multiple questions. It is a story completely based off of not knowing exactly what will happen next. but knowing something will happen. Whether it had been in the beginning when one could have been asking themselves what makes him so crazy, or at the end when one could have been asking themselves what happened after the cops were made aware of the situation, suspense was always there.
