Cassandra Clare uses 3rd person omniscient point of view in the novel. The book is written so the reader can see different points of views from all of the characters. The use of this point of view helps improve the style of the novel. Throughout the story many things happen all at once and using third person omniscient point of view helps the reader understand the plot better and improve the flow of the story. For example, in chapter nine Tessa is kidnapped, “He looked automatically for Tessa first, but she was nowhere to be seen” (207). Even after she is gone, the story is able to continue smoothly. Without this p.o.v the reader would not know of Will’s secretive feelings for Tessa, or that “every moment she is gone is a knife ripping me apart
