Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.
“Speak,” is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. The setting is in Syracuse, New York in the early 2000’s. Melinda Sordino is the narrator of the story and is a freshman at Merryweather High School. During the summer before her freshman year, she goes to a party with her close friends filled with alcohol and music. At the party, she drinks many beers and becomes intoxicated.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson should be mandatory reading for 8th graders due to its take on how trauma can affect the lives of its survivors. Through completed writing, the National Book Award finalist and Golden Kite Award winner, Laurie Anderson captures the thoughts of Melinda Sordino. After she gets raped and has to deal with a misunderstanding that leaves her silent and outcast. This short book of 224 pages is mostly written in short statements. From casual thoughts such as, “I zone out,” to ones with impact like, “Why go to school.”
Laurie Halse Anderson’s realistic fiction book Speak depicts the life of Melinda Sordino, a 9th grader who called the police at a party after being raped and is now a social outcast. The pain from the memories of being raped keep her silent as she struggles through a powerful depression and the problems that go with being in high school. Anderson uses mirrors as a motif throughout the story to portray the stages of depression Melinda goes through. At the start of the story Melinda leads a very depressed hidden life; Anderson uses the mirror to represent this.

There are 198 pages present. Speak has won many awards such as A Michael L. Printz Honor Book, a SCBWI Golden Kite Award, and BCCB Blue Ribbon, along with many others. Every character in this book plays an important role; however, three important roles in particular are Melinda, Heather, and David Petrakis.
Speak is a young adult novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson that tells the story of young Melinda Scordio who has to endure the aftermath of her rape, while also adapting to the changes it has brought upon her life. Melinda has just started high school, but due to past events that occurred last summer, she is left as an empty shell with her voice snatched away and little hopes of returning. Melinda has remained silent and finds herself lost in the chaos of it all. She is able to find her sanctuary, not only a place, but something with much more meaning. Throughout the book, Melinda struggles with opening herself up to people and being able to tell her story.
In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson the main character, Melinda, often turns to nature to provide an inspiring story for her feelings of hopelessness to fall back on. Though it is not always blatantly stated, while Melinda comes to terms with the fact that she has been raped nature provides parallels to Melinda's life, symbolizing changing sentiments as they occur. This symbolism manifests in Melinda's interests, the seasons, and her art project. Melinda often mentions plant seeds throughout the story. Melinda's first mention of them is in Biology class when the class dissects apples.

In 1969, a black, unarmed woman named Lillie Belle Allen got shot in her chest by white gang members while coming home from shopping with her sister. It took 32 years before she and her family received justice and the culprits that shot her received their charges; that is why her death should be commemorated. Tensions between whites and blacks increased in the 1960’s.
My name is Mildred Owens, I am 13 years old and my father had to go and fight in World War I. Today was the day that he finally got to return home to us. He had been away for almost a year. It was 1918, the end of World War I. The Last Battles had ended and we the americans had won the war.
After reading a couple historical accounts about Nazis, Germanization, and the “True Aryan” race. Also, reading the first few chapters of the novel, “Someone Named Eva” by Joan M. Wolf. This book was mixed with fiction and facts from the historical accounts to make a very intriguing and interesting novel about a young girl being Germanized and brainwashed. Some of these similarities that occurred throughout the novel were the children being sized/measured to see if they fit the “Aryan Race”. Miladia was taken into a special room at the High School, she was measured by her nose, feel of hair, eye color, and other facial features, this happened to the children in Lidice in real life as well.

. I always went to the same synagogue B’nai Chaim, although I had a baby naming ceremony at a synagogue in Denver. The Hebrew name the rabbi and my parents agreed on Ruth Alessia. I got the name Ruth from my grandmother who passed away and Alessia because it close to my middle name Alyssa. I went to religious school every Sunday from 6 years old to 14 years old.
On the Fields’s Farm there was a slave named Melissa Paterson. She worked really hard for her food at the end of the day. At the end of the day she had to sleep in an old shack, which wasn’t very comfortable. Melissa’s job was to feed the animals. If she didn’t feed the animals she would get hit really hard.
1) (The Truth about Stories) Oral storytelling is main staple of Native American tradition. Stories are passed down from generation to generation and many of them contain common themes and characteristics. They often revolve around family and the importance of community. As Thomas King says in The Truth about Stories, many of Native American creation myths are about cooperation and unity, unlike the Judeo-Christian belief of a sole Creator and world built on competition.
Kaye Gibbons once remarked that “someone once told me...writing is an act of faith. Another person told me that forgiving is also an act of faith. That’s true. I think both heal, both are arts. What a fine thing it is to do both at once” (Gibbons).
