Castleman’s Disease Immune System

Castleman’s disease, also known as giant lymph node hyperplasia and CD, is a rare disorder that involves an overgrowth of cells in your body’s lymphatic system. It was first described by Dr. Benjamin Castleman in 1950. CD is not a form of cancer but is called lymphoproliferative disorder, which means there is an abnormal growth of lymphatic cells and is similar to cancers of the immune system. Although it may not be a type of cancer one of the two forms, called multicentric Castleman’s disease, acts just like lymphoma. Many people with multicentric Castleman’s disease actually develop lymphomas.

This form can also start to form in people with HIV, and in these people the disease is more dangerous and serious. Patients with MCD can contract a serious infection, fevers, weight loss, fatigue, numbness, night sweats, anemia, high numbers of antibodies in the blood, and nerve damage. The infection that may occur may stay for a long period of time because the immune system is failing. Also lymphoma is easily developed and is quite hard to dispose of. The release of IL-6 is caused by HIV-8, some studies suggest that cytokines are released by a mutation. HIV-8 is also capable in causing cancerous tumors in the blood vessels.
