As many readers read “Catcher In The Rye” many will agree that Holden exemplifies depression, feelings of worthless and lack of sleep. Although shows the symptoms of bipolar disorder: feeling confident, lack of concentration, switching on topics and a desire for sex. Holden Caulfield is an adolescent who shows various symptoms of sickness. Through the book he shows symptoms of bipolar disorder and depression: sleep disorder, feeling worthless, and no care which are all aspects of both. But one symptom that only bipolar disorder has, is the feeling of confidence, which isn't an aspect of depression. In Ch.22 Holden orders a prostitute, and seems to value her because he goes to change, yet when she arrives he loses the feeling of sexualty. One must see both sides, on how one is more related. The feeling of confidence is clearly shown in the bipolar disorder. Hypo-mania is a symptom, a feeling of hyperactivity. The symptom, lack of concentration is specified by helpguide.org, “Highly distractible, unable to concentrate” (2). One specific form of this symptom is unable to stay on the same topic. Lack of concentration can be seen when Holden says," I'm quite a heavy smoker, for one thing—that is, I used to be. They made me cut it out. Another thing, I grew six and a half inches last year. That's also how I practically got t.b.” (Salinger 1.10). In this situation, Holden’s lack of concentration , would be switching up from him being a heavy smoker to growing over six inches in a year. This is an important example of Holden’s inability to focus; he has this sense of switching on topics, in other words speaking what first pops into his head.
