In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.

Holden believes that growing up is going to cause him to lose all innocence in himself.
Salinger's novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield undergoes significant changes in his personality and outlook on life. Holden is introduced in the book as a disengaged, rebellious adolescent who rejects parental authority and personal relationships. Yet, as the story goes on, Holden grows more aware of how his actions influence others, open to asking for help and support, and tolerant of the hardships and challenges of life. These three factors have all assisted in Holden's character and personal development. Holden becomes more conscious of the value of interpersonal relationships after realizing how his actions affect other people.
The novel “The Catcher in the Rye” was about the journey of a adolescent boy finding his way to adulthood. In the book Holden Caulfield was unsuccessful in finding his way to adulthood. Holden’s attitude in the novel throughout his journey was very immature. He also can't accept the fact that innocence can’t be forever protected. Lastly, Holden calls everyone a phony when in reality he is the real phony.
In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden demonstrates the struggle of transitioning between childhood and adulthood by revealing his hassle to grow up. Maturity comes through being an adult and growing up is all about becoming more mature. Throughout the book, Holden goes through numerous conflicts and problems. In the beginning of the book, Holden is gives information about himself.
These two struggles are what causes Holden to realise his purpose is being a catcher in the rye. His struggle to adulthood is quite evident. Holden states that the adult world is a nasty and horrible place, he thinks that the adult world is very phony, fake, and corrupt. These are words he uses quite often to describe the adult world, proving that he despises the thought of being an adult.
Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
I am pleasantly surprised with this chapter book. The point of view is of a younger boy who has a lot of behavioral problems. Although he has good intentions he finds him self swallowing keys, cutting off peoples noses and jumping into hay bails on field trips. After being sent to a special education school for 6 weeks his life starts to turn around. He has never had a stable home life until his alcoholic mother decides to care for him again.

In particular, an instance of Holden’s willingness to die for a noble cause rather than living is his encounter at the Edmont Hotel with Maurice and Sunny, the prostitute who he doesn’t even have sex with. When Holden is confronted by the duo to steal five dollars from him, he speaks out and refuses to pay. His efforts were to no avail though, as he not only gets punched but also his money taken away from him. After pretending to be shot, he finally reveals what he felt like doing, which “…was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window.”
The Catcher in the Rye involves an older teenager named Holden, who expresses his immaturity. “‘Our youth today has no moorings, no criterion beyond instinct, no railing to grasp along the steep ascent to maturity.’” (Peterson 1). Younger people are known as childish and illiterate, who only want an enjoyable lifestyle. Becoming an adult is not a part of Holden’s agenda.
During his journey home, Holden seeks someone who he can emotionally vent to. Since his sister would tell his their parents that he called, she is not an option. He goes through several failed attempts of finding someone he can express himself to, until he finally meets at taxi driver that is willing to give at least some feedback. After doing so Holden says, “He was the touchiest guy I ever met. Everything you said made him sore.”
In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger readers are introduced to a young man named Holden Caulfield who introduces himself and begins to tell his story of how and why he left his school; Pencey Prep. In the story, Holden explains how he is being kicked out of school and doesn't want his parents to know and so leaves school early. throughout the story, Holden explains what happens to him before he must go home and act like he is home from school for a break instead of being kicked out. When it comes to the topic of Author's purpose of The will of individual vs the will of the majority some will think the purpose is to show that Holden going against the will of society to rebel, however, I think the author’s purpose of The Catcher in the Rye was to show that the individual will manifest in his desire for isolation comes from his is fear and damage done by fear of pain, failure, rejection, and is unwilling or unable to go along with the majority. This all shown through Imagery, symbolism, and diction.
Holden Caulfield, the main protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, embodies the classic teenager in the process of discovering himself, and how the world works. But, regardless of Holden 's rich, prep school lifestyle, the series of events that have mapped out his life up to this point have utterly affected his emotional well being and perception of the world. Many traumatic events such as the death of holds brother Allie, the death of a class mate, and countless numbers of awkward incidents with adults have all added up to affects Holden 's well-being and detach him from reality. The death of Holden 's younger brother Allie has caused him to confuse his perception of reality and to alienate himself.
