The Catcher in The Rye

By: Valeria N. Vazquez Cintron

In “The Catcher in the Rye” , J.D Salinger perfectly captures a teenage boys struggle with adolescence. In the novel, Holden finds opportunities to rescue others, but he never focuses on rescuing himself. Holden needs guidance and help himself before he can help other people. The Catcher in the Rye includes the constant motif of Holden Caulfield rescuing others, while failing to rescue himself

In the novel, Holden connects to a poem and talks about what he wants to do when he is older. “ What I have to do I have to catch everybody if they start to fall over” (Salinger 173), throughout the novel Holden has had some times where he wanted to jump out of a window and kill himself.
