In the essay, “A Genealogy of Modern Racism”, the author Dr. Cornel West discusses racism in depth, while conveying why whites feel this sense of superiority. We learn through his discussion that whites have been forced to treat black harshly due to the knowledge that was given to them about the aesthetics of beauty and civility. This knowledge that was bestowed on the whites in the modern West, taught them that they were superior to all races tat did not emulate the norms of whites. I choose The Trauma of Racism: America’s Original Sin by Kenneth T. Pons because the title caught my attention and racism is something that impacts me directly and it is all over the news. This article was great and provided alternate ways to treat racism in ways I have not thought about before. I also discovered interesting statistics and different ways at looking at racism that I was unaware of. In the play A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry introduces a family trying to move up in the world but has trouble doing so because they are racially opposed by society. Starting in the 1890’s the Jim Crow Laws were used in the South as a way to oppose African-American giving them a status called, “separate but equal.” They mandated segregation of public schools, public transportation, public facilities including restaurants, bathrooms, and drinking fountains. Contracts not only exist between the business side of the world, but also between the social side. The social contract is the idea that sets morality as a compromise agreement that results in social benefits for all. I do believe the social contract exists in the world we live in. Whether it comes to a basic promise between friends to an agreement between partners in crime. However, the social contract seeks out to benefit equally between both parties of the agreement which ensures society will act according with their contract in a political and social setting.
What must be kept in mind is by not stopping negative actions such as racism or discrimination, one is encouraging it.
Nonetheless, to resolve the racism, sexism and ignorance derived from it, people need to realize we are all human beings. We need to acknowledge that inconsistencies in our belief pose a dangerous threat. We must figure out who or what decided only certain people receive the benefit of the doubt while others suffer. We must hold those people accountable for their actions, they need to know privileges do not only apply to one group of people, it applies to all. Most importantly, we need to realize for all the time people have been on earth, the only consistency we managed is figuring out new ways to harm other people, from bows and arrows to atomic bombs.
Another very common form of racism that may not seem so obvious is racial stereotyping. Although it is sometimes funny or clever, it is offensive in many ways as you are generalizing one race and saying everyone of that particular race is the same. The Church teaches that racism is strictly a sin and there is no going around that fact. The U.S. Bishops wrote in Brothers and Sisters To Us, “Racism is a sin; a sin that divides the human family, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father.” Inferiorizing another race in any way directly disobeyes Jesus’ Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
