Causes of the American Revolution As Huey Newton (an an African-American political activist and revolutionary who co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966) once said,“you can jail a revolutionary, but you can’t jail the revolution.” The change could never be stopped, once it started. There were many causes leading up to the American Revolution, which was one of the most influential wars for America. Acts, battles, and congress were all causes of the great rebellion.

Acts and laws pushed the colonists over the edge. The stamp act taxed printed matter such as books, newspapers, and pamphlets, legal documents, ship’s cargo lists, playing cards and dice. The colonists did not approve of the laws, because they were being taxed with representation in Parliament, and their money was going to England. The …show more content…

The first continental congress was held in Philadelphia, in September and October of 1774. They sent a message to King George to give them a say in Parliament. The first document, called A Declaration and Resolve, was written stating the colonists rights. Then, they congress wrote the second document, called Continental Association, told of the colonist’s complaints and plans for boycotts. The third complaint outlined the colonies complaints and rights, and asking for the King to understand again. They decided they would meet again, and this would be the second continental congress. This time, they named George Washington the general of the New Continental Army. They also approved the Declaration of Independence. Common Sense was written shortly after the second congress met. It was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine, and encouraged regular folk to act. “Many colonists rallied around Paine’s pamphlet, crying for unity.” After Common Sense was published, the Declaration of Independence was signed.
