“It doesn’t affect me” or “They’ll move past it” are two phrases that are used too often when talking about gun violence. It may be easy to assume that gun violence is not affecting America when you have never experienced it, but is that really true? Students and children are the future of America, and those same kids are going to school everyday with the fear that they will be the next victim of a school shooting. School shootings leave kids and families with lasting injuries, mental illnesses, and fear for life. So how does this affect them, and what can be done to prevent gun violence in schools in the future?
To fully understand how gun violence is affecting students in America, it is important to understand the reason behind these school shootings. In many situations where a kid is committing an act of violence at school, there is a clear correlation to bullying, (Examining School Safety 9). While this does not excuse the actions of the shooter, it does show the reason that led up to their actions. Bullying causes kids to experience emotional trauma, and oftentimes kids who experience serious levels of bullying end up developing mental health issues from it. In a shooting in Richneck Elementary School where a 6 year old shot his 1st grade teacher, school leaders were warned that the child was armed three times before the shooting took place, (Bibeau and Mervosh 1). Seeing these threats be so quickly dismissed by schools shows a serious neglect for student and faculty safety. This truly shows such a simple way to prevent gun violence, caring. Taking threats seriously and making efforts to look into them, would prevent so much loss and heartache. Having people in leadership positions in schools who do not take threats like these seriously, should not be given the power to control how situations like these are
