My topic is about the Prohibition. That is the act and policy implemented by US government from 1920 to 1933. Prohibition started with the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which banned the manufacture, sales, and transportation of the alcohol. There were many causes of Prohibition claimed by historians. Superficially, the most major reason was to prevent the harmful effects caused by alcohol like alcoholism, crime, erosion of social and work ethics, and etc. It was also based on the religious factor like Puritanism. However, the result of the Prohibition was considerably disastrous to American society. It started with those specific purpose but led American society to the terrible outcome in many aspects. I am going to concretely discuss about the cause and effect of the Prohibition. There were a lot of reasons why I chose this topic. I recently have studied the American history and “The Great Gatsby” in my reading class. Both are strongly related to the prohibition era of the American society. Because I was into the classic gangster Noir films like “Once upon a time in America”, and “The Untouchables”, which dealt with the Prohibition era. Furthermore, fact that I heard in the reading class which Prohibition facilitates the gangsterism and caused many social problem attracted my attention intensely. …show more content…

By doing this, I want to clarify that the original and divine purpose of the specific polices, especially relevant to addictive and harmful things like drug, alcohol, gambling, prostitution can cause the unexpected disaster and make the condition worse. Thus, I’d like to say that kind of polices should be examined and discussed more thoroughly and prudently before settlement and enforcement. I am going to scrutinize and interpret the certain aspects of the phenomenon which followed the prohibition
