According to an article on The Atlantic, more than 160,000 students decide to stay home from school everyday in order to avoid being bullied. Bullying is a repeated social, verbal, and psychological behavior that an individual or group uses to inflict fear, harm, or distress on another individual or group. There are various causes for bullying; for instance, someone that wants to fit in with a group of people may act as a bully in front of peers because he or she might think it makes them “cool.” Desiring power and continuous control over others is another common reason why one becomes a bully. Advancements in technology have created new methods for bullying. Bullying has moved away from the face-to-face harassment and moved on to wireless bullying, commonly referred to as cyber bullying. As there are a vast number of causes of bullying, there are also an ample number of effects. What makes the situation worse, is that while the victim is getting bullied, there is no one attempting to halt the horrendous act.
