The causes of Civil War are still debated upon even till this day. Slavery is the most popular opinion echoed through out textbooks, but what they fail to cover in depth are the issues of state rights. This concept was a warmly contested as to what powers are t be expressed by the state and which are to obtained by the Federal government. As the nation was expanding, Federal government began pushing an abolitionist agenda, which would change an established institution. The South was depends upon slave as means of free labor for their agricultural dominate economy (SOURCE). Even before President Lincoln took office there were thoughts of succession. However, they were attempts to simmer down that idea with compromises such as the Kansas–Nebraska act in 1854 and Fugitive slave law, resented by many in the north. Similar to which came first, chicken or the egg, slavery and states right is not either or. Neither one is a separate, stand alone issue, as they merged together as a reason for succession. Their argument is all of these actions would be more finically responsible and save mass bloodshed. However, during that time period, the value of slaves was held at high importance.
