Strokes are the number five cause of death and are one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot, or when the blood vessel ruptures. When that happens, the brain doesn’t receive the oxygen-rich blood it needs and brain cells begin to die quickly.
There are three types of strokes: ischemic, hemorrhagic, and transient ischemic attack. Ischemic stroke occurs when there is a blockage within a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain, and accounts for 87 percent of all stroke cases (American Stroke Association). Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel bursts (American Stroke Association). There are two types of weakened blood vessels that typically cause hemorrhagic stroke, which are aneurysms and arteriovenous (American Stroke Association). The last stroke, transient ischemic attack, occurs when there is a temporary clot (American Stroke Association).
