1. Identification and evaluation of sources This investigation, examining certain events of the Cold War, will answer the question: To what extent did President Ronald Reagan’s actions aid in the end of the Cold War? The Cold War was a war between the United States and the Soviet Union that took place from 1947 to 1991. During that time several United States presidents took office, one of the last being Ronald Reagan whose actions have been argued to have been more influential than the rest and impactful toward the downfall of the ongoing war with the Soviet Union.
Prior to reading this engaging, yet historical-filled book, my personal amount of knowledge on our nation 's history, as well as the founders who created it, lacked. Joseph J. Ellis -philosopher, and winner of a pulitzer prize- uses his awareness and understanding of American history to provide readers with a ‘modern insight’, enabling us to paint a picture in our minds what really occurred during the beginning years of our nation. While reading this book, it directs your attention to six key events. Within each of these events, Ellis describes the people involved in these particular affairs (the founding fathers), their lives, and also the relationships these men shared.
From 1947-1991 the Cold War lasted between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two Administrations responsible for the victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War are President Reagan and President Bush. President Reagan started his presidency in 1981, and after all his success while being president, he won re-election in 1985. Now, a key reason why the US remained successful with ending the Cold War after Reagan’s two terms was because in 1990 Reagan’s Vice President George H. W. Bush was elected President. This was a good turnout because Reagan and Bush shared a lot of the same ideas, so Bush was able to just pick up where Reagan left off.
The Cold War wasn’t really much a war with large scale fighting between the two sides, the United Sates and the Soviet Union. The war started in 1947 and ended around 1991. The United States saw that The Soviet Union was a trying to spread communism and this was a threat to their effort on trying to let the Eastern Europe countries capitalist countries. The United States formed NATO with other countries to create a protective alliance system. This caused a worry to the Soviet Union, a threat to their security.
Before Reagan’s election in 1980, the United States and the Soviet Union experienced détente, or a period of relaxed tension. However, Reagan was harsh on the Soviet Union, adopting a harsh anti-communism policy. By doing so, Reagan was able to help end the Cold War and cause the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Reagan saw the Soviet Union as being “prepared to commit any crime, to lie, to cheat”, and that they were “the focus of evil in the modern world” (Kennedy, 690).
The investigation will assess to what extent Reagan used religion as motivation to wage war against communism from 1981 to 1988. During the Cold War various factors, including ideological differences led to conflict between American democracy and communism in Korea, Vietnam, and the U. S. S. R. In America, a religious awakening occurred, reaffirming traditional American values while the U. S. S. R. or Soviet Union and other communist nations embraced secularism. Ronald Reagan witnessed and impacted the end of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. During the cold war, the United States funded and pushed many innovations in order to ensure its success in the space race. The reason the government spent so much money and put in so much effort was that they wanted to improve the country’s national defense. They were concerned with the Soviet Union’s scientific and technological research so they decided to combat them by increasing funding in R&D.
Some historians believe the Cold War was inevitable because of the hostilities from both America and the Soviet Union after World War II. America believed that the USSR was an expansionist country trying to spread an evil, communistic idea throughout the world. Although the countries never directly fought against each other, as they only fought in proxy wars, there was still extreme conflict. The United States responded to the Soviets actions in Germany, Europe, and their national actions. These responses were justifiable, or so many Americans at the time believed.
