On June 18, 1812, President James Madison declared War on Great Britain. The War, known as the War of 1812, lasted two years and ended in a stalemate with the Treaty of Ghent. Many events led up to the war, including British impressment of American sailors, the Embargo and Non-Intercourse Acts, and the British aid to the Native Americans. During the War, both the American and the British troops celebrated victories and faced defeats. As a result, Americans and Canadians both gained pride and nationalism, since their country put up a strong fight. Foreign affairs played a large role before, during and after the War.
