Today, politics is a subject area that many people avoid discussing. The question is, what do you do when a family member supports something that makes you question their sanity? Depending on the family situation, this might develop a great strain on their relationships. This can cause families to become estranged and distant. Through the use of flashback plotting in the book Dreaming in Cuban, we can see that the Cuban Revolution aided in the division of Celia’s family.
Celia Del Pino is a woman who has great political beliefs. She supports the Cuban revolution and any changes that may come with it. She is so engaged in the political aspect of her life she even goes to the extent of keeping watch at her house to make sure no secret attack happens. Throughout the book, Celia does not hold back her feelings about Cuba. As the story continues to unfold we can see that she is a strong communist who holds her values and beliefs to high standards. Not even family can get away with disagreeing with her type of thinking.

Through the book, you can see her constant irritation with Cuba and anything associated with it. For her, Cuba is a reminder of a very horrifying past that included being raped by a revolutionary soldier. At one point in the text, this message is depicted loud and clear. “She wants no part of Cuba, no parts of its wretched carnival floats creaking with lies, no part of Cuba at all, which Lourdes claims never possessed her” (73). This hatred causes a rift between mother and daughter, to the extent of Lourdes immigrating to Brooklyn with her daughter
