Advertising has had control on the lives of consumers for years and years. From misinformation and degradation of self-esteem, to censorship and an extremely wasteful society, advertising's negative effects have put a dent in today's society. Most people today are misinformed; whether it be due to censorship or false-advertising. Advertising has all but pulled the trigger on completely ruining the self-esteem of millions of teens and young adults because they are made to believe that they are not good enough. Granted, some producers and advertising agencies have decent intentions; however, most are just trying to get as much money out of the consumer as possible. This years election campaign has been exceptionally feisty and both sides are throwing insult after insult. They continue to show the positives of their side, and the negative of the others, but how much is taken out of context, and is a lie. For example, in a few of the advertisements I have seen, she shows how she is always supported women, and that makes it seems like she has always stuck to her beliefs. However, in another advertisement, videos are shown of her saying she does not support gay rights, and they proceed to change as time goes on. Originally, prescription drug ads were only for doctors, and have since been shown to consumers. The problem with this is that people see the ad, and they buy the drug, whether or not it is appropriate for them, or if it is the correct prescription drug. Companies only have to put the name and what it is for, they do not have to give details about when to use it. Also, the FDA says that is is only necessary to put the most significant side-effects, but not all of them (Spiegel, 2nd header, 2009). It does not help that when advertisers make ads for prescription drugs, they portray happy families who appear to not have any problems. Moreover, advertising leads to continuous waste in our society. Advertisers are constantly posting and screening the new and improved products that just everyone needs. Of course everyone wants new, but the disposal of the now "outdated" products is leading to numerous amounts of waste. Instead of repairing things when they break, people just buy the new thing because they saw the advertisement on the television.
