Google’s Response to Chinese Censorship
Censorship is a life problem within the Chinese internet. The main aim of censorship in the country was to keep sensitive sentiments among individuals in the nation at a minimum. Censorship in the country disregards the principles of the UN Global Compact (Boehler, par 1). Censorship restricts individuals from exercising their human rights. Every human being has the right to speech. Censorship limits individuals in china from expressing their feelings in the internet.
Google’s move to end censorship in China over cyber-attacks is a moral move. Fulfilling these obligations respects the constitutive communities of the local people. Additionally, the move is essential based on the company’s support for the UN Global Compact in regards to making sure that the move is not complicit in human rights abuses (Boehler par 4). The core businesses of Google are derived from revenues gained through their search engines. As a result, the search engine is all about information. Therefore, their initial censorship move was immoral since they terminated contracts illegally. As a result, their operations in China did not help the economy. Consequently, Google should stop the censorship to help China’s economy and boost struggling companies that struggled after the cancellation of their contracts.
Secondly, Google can behave ethically by standing against the Chinese government’s censorship schemes. The move to initiate the relocation to Hong Kong through the rerouting process was a step to help the suffering users in China. In this case, the move would counteract the government’s schemes to censor users. Consequently, it is notable that such a move would help in terms of helping the users, which is an ethical move by Google
