"To define the government's role in internet content, we must first understand our constitution and what it allows. Right in the Bill of Rights, the 1st Amendment, free speech. To this country, there is nothing more important than that right. Without it, we wouldn’t be the country we are today. In wake of all of the negativity surrounding free speech, no one quite realizes what the bigger picture it about it. There would be no civil rights movements, for women or African Americans. There would be no advancements of any kind in business, technology, society, all because the right to speak your mind is so powerful. This of course protects our freedom of religion, freedom of the press and free speech. Fast forward to 1955, where an African American woman refused to give up her seat because of the color of her skin. In a period of racism, the first amendment was not what it should be because of the way people perceive it. The word perspective is a word that needs to be kept in mind during the discussion regarding this issue. Because of the era we as the country we are had just gotten out of, the nation still did not believe that African Americans were the same as us. Men did not believe that women are the same as them. And as time went on, protests occurred, marches became normal, the news reported everything. How was this all possible, because of our right as Americans to free speech. And that right was the reason women got their right to vote and African Americans truly felt the rights all americans shared. This is why the first amendment is crucial to how we got to where we are
