The Great Firewall of China
The Internet has made it easy for anyone to have access to information and to connect with people around the globe. While this technological advancement has improved every aspect of life, not every country is on board with the idea. Communist China has censored its people from having access to various forms of media including cable news, books, and now the World Wide Web. China blocks many websites in an attempt to hide information from its public and has been doing this for years. The result of this censorship is a detrimental impact on the industrial country. In 2014, the Chinese government cut off access to these sites, making it difficult for investors to stay connected. Due to this increase in censorship, many investors have begun to defer their investments and in turn, will harm the Chinese economy. The fewer investors China attracts, the less money will be put in to stimulate the economy. Small business may never get started and the currency may see an inflation increase. The ban has a ripple affect, causing the population of China to become less connected to the world. In the long term, it could bring on a recession and a failure of their economy. They do not like change and see external influences as a threat to their way of life. Although it may give a just a reason for such an outrageous law, it undermines the fact that it causes more harm than good. Though it has successfully kept some from seeing the truth, lots have seen the harmful consequences it has brought. If the whole idea of censoring people is to control them, then it is contradicting because it is adding to the problem.
The censorship may be for protection against democracy, but it should be absolved due to its lack of individual consideration. China needs to see past their traditional ways and lift the censorship to prevent their people from suffering oppression and deprivation of individual rights of knowledge of the world. Efforts to get rid of the block should be implemented as soon as possible.
In order for China's society and economy to survive, China's strict censorship policies need to be abolished. Doing so will promote greater social welfare and economic growth, but if they continue as they are now, China’s citizens will continue to be oppressed and stripped of individual freedom. It's not too late for China to change its ways before major consequences take place and the future of the country is compromised.
