Rudolpho Anaya’s main claim in “ Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry” is censorship and how it affects chicano writers’ stories in this day and age. Rudolpho is a writer himself who tries to get other writers like his friend, to apply for a literary fellowship in the National Endowment of Arts. Rudolpho believes that chicano writers are being held back, emotionally and creatively with their essays. Anaya first presents his central idea when he writes, “ Censorship has affected me directly, and I have formed some ideas on this insidious activity.”. He supports this idea with evidence like his friend, who is a chicano writer that was getting denied access into the fellowship because the judges couldn’t read spanish or bilingual manuscripts. …show more content…

I had a friend in elementary school who used to be super expressive with everything he does, he did whatever he wanted and couldn’t give a care less about what other people thought. He always had a big smile on his face and was rarely ever sad, unless a teacher would yell at him, besides that he knew how to light up a room and make someone’s day. At the end of elementary something changed, I saw him at the orientation at our soon to be middle school, he seemed off, I thought to myself it must have just been a bad day and went on with my summer. When school started I realized my friend was being very easy going, he would still pull jokes and make us laugh but everytime we went out into the public his attitude and mindset changed completely. When he hung out with us he was his regular self but as soon as we went with another group of people he would just stay quiet. I realized he was doing this to appease other people because he felt otherwise he was going to embarrass himself in front of everyone.He continued like that for years and because of it our friendship grew weaker and weaker, til we just stopped talking to each other.
