2. The Certified Family Life Educator(CFLE) content area I chose to discuss is interpersonal relationships. The reason why I chose interpersonal relationships is because I believe it is important to have a positive relationship with the families and children you are serving. According to the website, “interpersonal relationships is an understanding of the development and maintenance of interpersonal relationships(www.ncfr.org) for example, communication skills (listening, empathy, self-disclosure, decision-making, problem solving, and conflict resolution), relating to others with respect, and sincerity. I first learned about HDFS when I completed my associate degree at the community college. I knew for my future career I wanted to work children and families and this degree option matched my career goal. After reading the chapter, HDFS is what I thought it will be. I knew choosing a degree in this area will provide me with the foundation to work with children and families as well open other career options for me. New information I learned about the HDFS field is the family case management(FCM) career option. I did not know this career option existed in this field. According to the book, “family case management(FCM), involves work with families, particularly those who have entered the government child and family welfare system” (Walsh, DeFlorio, Burnham, and Weiser, 11). In addition, FCM uses a strength-based approach to working with families and guiding them to locate resources to help meet children’s needs. Working as a FCM seems like something I will like to do for a future career also. Lastly, I did not know marriage was an important part of family studies.
