Challenges Of Penelope Encounters In The Odyssey

One of the challenges Penelope encounters is not knowing when or if Odysseus is going to return home. Ten years after leaving for Troy all the men from other kingdoms return except for Odysseus and his men. Penelope has no idea why Odysseus has yet to return and can only assume the worst. As the years pass by there is still no sign of Odysseus and his men. Penelope needs to deal with the suitors and take care of the people who live in Ithaca. The suitors are bugging her about picking a husband and she can not hold them off for much longer. Penelope “sobbed” (546) and “let the salt tears flow” (546) as she gets ready to tell the suitors about the contest she is holding in order to decide who her husband will be. Life is very unpredictable and anything can change at any given moment in time. There will be plenty of times when I will have no idea what is up ahead of me and I will not know what the outcome is going to be like. I loathe not knowing when something is going to happen or how it will turn out in the end. I am someone who loves to plan everything out and make sure that I know what I will need to do each day. However, there will be times when I am not sure what will happen in the future. I can not do anything to figure it out and will just have to patiently wait, hoping everything turns out for the best. There will be times when I will want to “sobbed” (546) and “let the salt tears flow” (546) because I am left not knowing what will happen. I will be “praying all heaven” (549) that everything will be fine in the end and that I will be able to get through this challenge of not knowing what the outcome will be. Just like Penelope not knowing when Odysseus is coming home, I will also have to face challenges of not knowing something. It can be something as simple as not knowing if I got a good grade on a test or project or something as big as not knowing if I will get a job that can support my future family. I will have to be mentally and emotionally strong in order to overcome the challenges of not knowing something or what the outcome will
