Change, it’s something everyone witnesses at one point or another in their lives. In William Golding’s short story, Lord of the Flies, change is a foundation on the internal and external issues between the many boys on the island. Between the three boys Ralph, Jack and Piggy, change is seen the most in the sense of developing their characters. Ralph is shown as a leader to the boys in the beginning by bringing all the boys together, but as the book goes on Ralph loses his strength in influence. Jack is seen as an impulsive and power thirsty character to most, as he develops over the span of the book those initial traits are heightened. Throughout the book it is known that Piggy had grown in character substantially from the start. He hid behind the stronger boys who weren’t afraid to say what they wanted. Reaching close to the point of his death, it is shown that his last few minutes were spent with him fighting for what he believed in against Jack’s tribe. “I got this to say. You’re acting like a crowd of kids.” The booing rose and died again as Piggy lifted the white, magical conch. “Which is better-to be a pack of painted indians like you are or to be sensible like Ralph is?” (p.180). Showing that just moments before Piggy was killed, he wanted to make it clear what needed to be done if everyone was going to get off the island alive and well. In the present time after the other boys were rescued Piggy was present with them in thought, as the one person who wanted true peace and died from standing up for it. Although Piggy is not physically with the group of boys, he will always be with them as they all make their own transitions and face the consequences of their actions from the island. Always reminding the boys of sense, humility and reason, Piggy will live on through the boys who were kind to him. For the boys who tormented him, he will be a face they can never forget and will always remind them of the crimes that occurred on the
