Change is an inevitable part of life. The sad truth about change is, not everyone likes change. Another sad truth about change is, some people do not adjust well to it. This is a fact that affects soldiers who have been stationed away from home. Soldiers, who have been stationed away from home, become acclimated to their new surroundings and settle into their new normal. This adjustment makes returning comfortably to their homes and families increasingly difficult. Many soldiers who have been deployed cannot wait to return home from the field and reunite with their families, but what happens when a soldier cannot adjust to life away from the field? You old sleepyhead. What do you ever get up for?" (132) This shows that Harold mostly is in his room to himself and not even participating in the day to day life of his family. This was also a vivid depiction of what a soldier will do once they have returned home. Soldiers will isolate themselves in order to prevent themselves from being hurt in the field. This action is exactly the approach Harold takes when he returns home. Harold also isolates himself due to is the inability to adjust to his original life before being deployed.This not only impacts his interaction but also his interaction with women once he returned home. Harold admires the young ladies but does not wish to engage in contact or conversation with them due to the fear of having to actually converse with them. Hare believes that admiring them from the porch is best. This clearly depicts his aloof demeanor because he would rather not deal with actual human interaction. Hare constantly wishes for the life and interaction he had when he was deployed because of the simplicity of it all. He also prefers to be alone with his clarinet on the porch than to deal with other people. This shows that he would much rather entertain himself than deal with the companionship of the human variety.
